Thank you, Lois! I've known for years that God knows all of the sins committed by each of His children. If that were not true, how could God record the sins of some of His saints in the old and new testaments and then teach those portions of scripture to us? How could He give us powerful, life-changing testimonies about the past He has delivered us out of? How could He use those testimonies to lead others to Jesus? What you have shared is the glue I have needed to hold together what I have known in my heart is right. A big part of forgiveness is being at a place where knowing what someone has done to you has no negative effect on how you think about that person. Do I love the one I had to forgive as much as the one who has been good to me. This kind of forgiveness frees me from self-condemnation and being critical of others. Thank you again! May our God richly bless you!

Sin must be judged. God is holy and righteous, His character and very nature demand an accounting ... so God doesn't forget our sin in that sense, but those sins are now judged in Christ. He bore our sins and paid the price, He died for us. It's by His shed blood that our sins are as good as 'forgotten' – they've been fully taken care of and no longer count against us. His loving kindness and mercy make this 'forgetting' possible.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR MASTERY OF THE WORD:"REMEMBER".

I HAVE TROUBLE REMEMBERING SO MUCH OF WHAT I HAVE LEARNED.

I MARVEL AT PERSONS WHO RATTEL OFF EVENTS ON JEOPARDY AT A MOMENTS NOTICE AND I CAN NOT REMEMBER ANYTHING.

SOME PEOPLE TELL ME I CAN REMEMBER NUMBERS OF ADDRESSES WHERE I HAVE LIVED 90 YEARS AGO AND THEY THINK THAT IS AMAZING. SO BE IT!

I just discovered your website tonight and I have loved the articles I have read so far! I would like to add an LDS (Mormon) perspective to what you have said in this article, and what others have mentioned in the comments.

RE: Comment #22:
"is his “forgetting” (in the sense of ignoring past grievances) limited to the period of our lives we experience in the present (because he limits himself and his knowledge of us for our own sakes, since giving us knowledge of our futures would also destroy the point of free will?) Or does his “forgetting” (and remembering – that is, acting upon the promises that he’s given us, etc.) consciously extend throughout the course of our entire lives"

In the Book of Mormon, we learn that "all is as one day with God, and time only is measured unto men" (Alma 40:8), and in the LDS book of scripture known as the Doctrine and Covenants, we learn that "all things… are manifest, past, present, and future, and are continually before the Lord" (D&C 130:6). We, here on Earth, have time by measuring the movement of the planets. In reality, it is only a measurement that helps us in our learning process. To God, the only thing that matters is the present, what we are doing right now.

Though God can see the past, it no longer exists! He has no problem "forgetting" it because He lives in the present. However, to answer your question more fully, Proverbs 26:10-11 inform us that "The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors. As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly." D&C 82:7 tells us what this "reward" will be: "…go your ways and sin no more; but unto that soul who sinneth shall the former sins return, saith the Lord your God." When we return to our sins, they return to the present and God "remembers" them to our discredit and eventual punishment,

Good work on this article. I too have had some difficulty with the theology of God forgiving sin when there is no forgiveness without a blood payment. If there's a payment then no forgiveness is necessary. http://www.beinaberean.org/writings/god-cannot-forgive-sin.html

This is yet another example of how most of us take the Bible out of context and miss the full meaning. The fact that “forget” means not taking actin against completely changes the message that God is giving. It is nearly impossible to actually forget when someone wrongs you, but not taking action against them is a different matter. God remembers our sins, how could he not? But what matters is that he doesn’t act on them if we believe in him. Likewise, God always is aware of what’s going on in our life. Like you said, he doesn’t suddenly remember us. This is a great lesson that many of us overlook.

This article does a great job of showing the difference between Western and Eastern culture on the act of forgetting. As a Westerner I don’t know much about Eastern culture and this article brings out a whole new perspective. It’s interesting where the forgive and forget comes up because in some cases it can be pretty much impossible to forget what someone has done in the past. The forgiving and forgetting in Eastern culture is all about if you carry out the actions or not. In Western culture it’s mostly about what you say to someone, but it goes much deeper than that in Eastern culture.

Thank you for this illuminating article on sin. It is interesting to think that God doesn't "forget" sins, but just doesn't acknowledge them and just chooses to not act on them. I agree with this concept as it would be weird if an all knowing God would actually forget something. I feel like the Hebrew language has a lost of words which don't really have a meaning but instead paint a picture of an idea, and because of this there could be many different things mean when the bible says that God "doesn't remember" sins. Thanks again for writing this interesting article.
