thank you Lois,

what a great web-page - and I've bought one of the few still available copies of the 1st book you refer to; it looks amazing - many thanks

also very helpful to read down the comments and hear about the shepherd herding his sheep across the busy road in Amman - I searched You Tube and found it - also amazing

Fantastic indeed as you say in your intro that God uses such a rich picture to demonstrate eternal truths

I love sheep. I grew up in New Zealand and we had our own. However, like the other readers comments, I too thought that the sheep in Israel grazed in lush green pastures within the safety of wire fences.
That was until I went to Israel and when I also began to study the 23rd Psalm in great depth.
One thing that I hear time and time again being preached is that sheep are dumb animals. This is disparaging, both to sheep and to humans, as we are compared to sheep in the Bible.
Sheep are not dumb. They are helpless. They have no way to protect themselves. They have no horns, sharp teeth or claws and cannot outrun their predators. In Israel they have no way to search for food as they are not agile like goats, who can climb steep rock faces to forage.
We are helpless, just like sheep, who utterly depend upon the Shepherd, for protection and provision.
How wonderful to know that we are counted as part of His flock, that He will lead us through the rocky paths of life, that He will provide and protect and lead us safely home.

Dear Lois,
Thanks for recommending W Philip Keller's book Psalm 23. I ordered it and it only took a week or so to come to Australia from U.S.A. It really is enlightening and a wonderufl read. It has been especially useful as I am teaching the children at school about The Good Shepherd.
Thank you again.

Thanks for taking time to find these resources. It took me a long time to notice the actual depth of the stories in the Bible, and I know there are many people who don't see this at all. RVL showed me many small details and connections I had never noticed in the first few days taking his class, including the shepherd and the sheep. I'm sure your blog will help many people read the Bible and grow in their faith.

Its a good reminder that we do not obey God our of obligation, but we obey Him because we know him and we know that he will provide and protects us. Even though at certain times in our lives it feels as though he is not leading us.
It was very fascinating to learn about what the pastures are really like when they are talked about in the Bible. It's so true that God leads us and takes care of us right in the present time. We might not always know what's coming next but he has a plan; just like the shepherds do for their sheep grazing the pastures. I always thought the pastures described in the BIble were green, luscious, and had rivers of water flowing through them. This was definitely eye-opening and a very different perspective of the Bible for me.

I can not begin to thank you for this post. I have questioned before what the picture of the shepherd and the sheep exactly means for quite a while and you helped me answer some questions and gave me some resources to turn to. Thank you. Also, as I watched RVL's video I was stuck with amazement. My father was in the ICU for 32 days a year ago in March and April, and Psalm 23 was a verse that gave me comfort. I really did think that the "green pastures" were the same type of pastures as the pastures for grazing cows near where I live. It never occurred to me that if that was the case then I would never keep moving and I would stay in one spot. Although, these pastures were hills, with little bits of green, where the water has soaked. There was not a lot, but just enough. This really is a picture of how my family keep going when my dad was sick. God gave us what we needed in the moment, and it spurred us on to keep moving. By God's healing grace and power my dad is well, and back to work full time, helping other's become well. I truly now know why Psalm 23 was a comfort to my family during that time, God was giving us what we needed, and spurred us on to get more, when we needed it. --Thank you for helping me make this discovery. Our God reigns on high. -Allison
