Lighthouse Community Church, at 4321 S 11th St in Kalamazoo, Michigan will be hosting the RESONATE Discipleship Conference on September 23rd from 9 AM – 4:30 PM.
The emphasis this year will be on reading the Bible in context. We’ll be digging into how understanding the context of Scripture can deepen our understanding of what it means to be a disciple of Christ.
Gary Burge, New Testament professor at Calvin University, will speak in the morning.
I will speak in the afternoon.
We will both give two talks. One talk will examine a parable in light of context. The other will look at another New Testament passage where the Old Testament sheds light on the text. (More details to come later.)
Some background reading is Brad Gray‘s brief (30 page) ebook, “The #1 Mistake Most Everyone Makes when Reading the Bible.” (<- Available free at the link.) Brad talks about six lenses of context that are helpful for deepening understanding – historical, cultural, geographical, linguistic, visual and literary lenses.
