Happy New Year! & Days of Awe Prayer Guide

October 3, 2024 2 Comments

L’ shanah tovah – To a good new year!

Shofar prayer book

Today is Rosh HaShanah, which means the “head of the year.” Ten days later will be Yom Kippur, which is the day of Atonement, when all Israel will fast and ask for forgiveness for their sins before God.

PrayingOn Rosh HaShanah, shofars are blown to wake people up spiritually, to remind them to examine themselves of their sins and to repent before Yom Kippur. These 10 days are called the “Days of Awe.” They are a time for people to meditate on their past behavior and consider any conflicts they need to resolve, or any sins that they committed that they need to seek to be forgiven by others. It is traditional to pray extra prayers during these days.

CMJ-UK (The Church’s Ministry among Jewish People) is a ministry of the Anglican Church that teaches Christians wanting to learn about their Jewish roots. Each year they produce a prayer guide for the Days of Awe, and this year I contributed a day’s meditation. (See day #8).

If you would like to download a copy of the prayer guide, use the link below. (it is a 6 mbp pdf file):

The theme is “The Redemptive Awe of Messiah.” There are ten daily devotions exploring the Root of Sin, the Redemption of Messiah and how we can respond in prayer for the salvation of the Jewish people.
