I recently had an excellent discussion with James-Michael (“JM”) Smith on his Disciple Dojo Youtube channel. If you want to hear about
…how a nice Lutheran girl with a Ph.D. in Biology started writing about Jesus’ Jewish context
…some spicy discussions on highlights of my three “Rabbi Jesus” books
…and how you can win a set of my Rabbi Jesus books along with three others I wrote or edited (a $72 value!)
Click on the link below for the full episode, which goes about two hours. (He’s trying to become the Joe Rogan of biblical studies, I think.)
For busy people, JM made three short excerpts with highlights…
1. How Recognizing Jesus’ Jewish Background Makes a Difference
We talked about the Jewish idioms of “Fulfilling the Law” vs “Abolishing the Law” and the implications for Gentile Christians – from a chapter in Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus.
2. If your eye is bad…Jesus’ use of a Jewish expression
About how you need to know an idiom about having a “good eye” or “bad eye” to unlock part of the Sermon on the Mount – from a chapter in Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus.
3. Jesus, Eunuchs, and the Single Christian
About how Jesus promises that “eunuchs” (those who forego marriage to serve God) will be rewarded for their sacrifice from a chapter in Reading the Bible with Rabbi Jesus.
After watching these three clips, maybe you want to watch the whole video now. 🙂
Contest for a Set of Lois’ Books
You can also enter yourself into a contest to receive a full set of all the books I’ve been involved in, which include my three Rabbi Jesus books along Listening to the Language of the Bible and its Companion Bible Study and New Light on the Difficult Words of Jesus by David Bivin. (I chose some of Bivin’s best articles from his journal, Jerusalem Perspective and edited them into this book.)
Here are the rules:
1. Subscribe to Disciple Dojo and click the Notifications icon
2. Under the full-length video, leave a question having to do with anything we discussed in the video. Do not ask more than ONE question per comment!
3. On Feb. 15th, 2024 Lois will choose what she thinks is the best question and I will announce the winner in a short here on the channel, as well as on Instagram (Instagram.com/DiscipleDojo )
4. NOTE: If the winner does not have a U.S. Postal address, he or she will need to pay the cost of shipping and any customs fees in order to receive the books.
