In Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus, I consider how hearing Jesus’ teachings in their Jewish context can yield wisdom for today. I share Hebraic ideas that deepen our understanding of Jesus’ words and yield fresh insight for following him. Among other things, I explain

• How knowing Jewish idioms can help us better grasp what Jesus was saying

• How Jesus’ Middle Eastern culture sheds light on his parables, enlivening them in surprising ways

• How the Jewish world of Jesus can teach us how to pray with chutzpah and think with both hands

In my earlier book, Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus, Ann Spangler and I explored Jesus’ first-century Jewish world of rabbis and disciples, festivals, prayers and the Torah, and asked how Jesus’ setting sheds light on his ministry. In Walking, I ask what the implications of Jesus’ Jewish context are for how we live as his disciples.

By understanding the religious and cultural atmosphere in which Jesus lived and taught, we’ll begin to see why his first disciples abandoned everything to follow him. We’ll also look at the meaning within key Hebrew words that make Bible reading richer and deeper.

Come eavesdrop with me on the conversations among the rabbis of Jesus’ time. Learn how hearing Rabbi Jesus with the ears of a first-century disciple can yield practical insights that bring new depth to your spiritual life.

Lois, I purchased Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus on the Kindle and thoroughly enjoyed it. Having said that I am excited to read your next installment! On a side note, one of the things I enjoyed was the appendix of resources (books, video, internet, etc.) listed in the back of Sitting at the Feet..

While I have perused and used some of the resources listed, beginning on this initiative of learning can be somewhat overwhelming with all that is available. So in light of that I wanted to see what your thoughts are on the essential things to start with? Any books specifically or teachings series? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Lois, you will probably not remember me but I was one of the two Aussies that joined the group you and Bruce put together in 2004 to study in Israel with Wink and Steve. Since then I have devoted myself to a lot of study with respect to understanding how the words of the Bible were originally understood so that I can apply them better to my life today. Your recent books have been some of the resources I have used, thankyou. How can I get a copy of your new book? I notice that it is being shipped only in the US at present.

We have been reading this book as a guidance in our journey in Discipleship for a class I am studying in high school. The book is great at expanding a students knowledge of a more eastern way of thinking instead of the typical western thinker. It has helped me grow in the understanding of Jesus and how he taught but also why he taught that way. A great book and an awesome read.

    Hello Lois

Thank you so very much for my signed copy of “Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus”. I received it on Friday, and can’t wait to begin reading it.

Thanks again and may you be truly blessed for opening up Jesus’ world for me…. have always had a dream to be able to tour the Holy Land but will never be able to afford it, so this book is a wonderful blessing.

Much love and keep up the good work.

After reading what it means to “hear”, I had new insight on the meaning of 1John 5:14. If we know that God hears us when we ask in His will, we know also that we have what we have asked for. As God hears He acts. He dosen’t ask any less of us.

Thanks everyone, once again. Gail, I should just say, you have a copy of the hard cover book published in the States.

One thought for international readers: Bookdepository.com (out of the UK) will ship books anywhere in the world for free, and they have very good prices. I don’t know how they do it. Here is the link to order Walking in the Dust from their site:

My only concern is knowing by history His name never could have been jesus. Search it for yourself. I share not of contention or argument but out of search for truth

Just finished chapter 9 of this book today, a chapter on praying with “chutzpah.” Lois Tverberg provides some great new insights for familiar teachings of Jesus. After providing some helpful historical, linguistic and literary context information, she offers VERY relevant practical applications of these familiar passages in ways you may not have considered before. Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus has added value to my understanding of Jesus’ teachings. And, the book has challenged me towards spiritual growth in important areas. I still have about six more chapters to listen to (purchased the book on Audible.com), but at this point, I am loving it! (I posted this on FB today!) 🙂

I have recently read Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus and loved it. I am now considering it for a small group study that I teach. There are questions at the end of each chapter which I plan to utilize. Will there be any other leader’s guide available? I do know that I am not very well-informed in this area and hope to do further reading. I have read Walking in the Steps of Rabbi Jesus and ordered Jesus the Jewish Theologian to read. Are there any other specific books that might be helpful? Enjoy your writing very much.

    Lois:

I am reading Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus. Footnote 15 of Chapter 3 says there is an audio file of the Shema on your web site. I can not find it and the web search doesn’t locate it either. Can you clarify ?

    Thanks – Dave

Dave, thanks for the reminder! I forgot about it, but here’s a link to a really nice version.

The singers are students at Western Theological Seminary (in my town) who also include a sign language interpretation. They are singing Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and then at the end they add Leviticus 19:18, “And you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
